Community College Parking Lot and Pedestrian Improvements
The project involved CAD design, construction administration, and delivery. Notable
recommendations included raised pedestrian crosswalks for traffic calming and pedestrian safety.
Project Components
• Pavement Design
• Traffic Calming
• Construction Admin
• Pedestrian Safety and ADA considerations (pavement marking)
Project Overview
While working for another firm, David Harris worked with a community college in
Charlotte to investigate several areas of failing pavement and settlement of curbs
and drainage inlets. Pavement markings had faded and needed to be brought to
current standards. Mr. Harris proposed a raised crosswalk design to calm traffic
and enhance pedestrian safety. The project required coordination of construction
phasing and scheduling to minimize disruption of student activities.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
In addition to considerations of the semester schedule, the project required
rehabilitation of the failing subsurface due to water infiltration through the
cracked and deteriorated pavement. Failures were apparent with cracking and
settlement in traffic areas and ponding near curb inlets.
SUCCESS HIGHLIGHTS
Subsurface restoration and regrading, updated pavement markings, and raised
crosswalks improved the functionality and performance of the parking lot.
